IMM’s review of the scientific literature shows that the use of new nicotine products is linked to a range of serious health problems. These include asthma, lung disease, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, although the scientific evidence varies in strength.

Research on e-cigarettes is the most extensive, but often methodologically limited, according to the report. Knowledge about HTPs and white snus is even more limited, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions – but high levels of nicotine and some chemicals in the products are a cause for concern. In particular, the report highlights the need for more research on effects during pregnancy, impact on children and long-term effects.

The IMM points to an urgent need for more large-scale and long-term studies to assess the risks of these products, which are currently used by a growing proportion of the population, often by young people who believe they are harmless.
