The decision is a historically important step in the fight to reduce tobacco harm in the world and save lives. The agreement in Seoul involves, among other things, increased control of legal trade through licensing, documentation and systems to be able to track tobacco products on their way from manufacturer to individual customer.
Most of the world's countries agreed today on how they will jointly combat tobacco smuggling and the illicit trade in tobacco. This was achieved by the participants in the fifth Conference of the Parties (COP5) to the Convention on Tobacco Control, currently underway in Seoul, South Korea, unanimously adopting an agreement on the work against the illicit trade.
