Eurostat has compared the daily use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, white snus and heated tobacco products in the EU, writes Tobacco Journal.

Bulgaria has the highest proportion of daily users at 26,3%, followed by Sweden at 23,9% and Croatia at 23,6%.

In the Netherlands, the usage is lowest, 9,9%, ahead of Ireland 11,7%, Belgium 13,6% and Luxembourg 13,8%.

Use is decreasing in the EU

Use across the EU has declined. In 2022, 17,5 percent of the population, aged 16 and over, used tobacco and nicotine products daily. In the new statistics, for 2025, it is slightly lower, 16,5 percent.

Most people in the EU (77,5%) do not use tobacco or tobacco-related products at all, or at least have not done so in the last 12 months.

Between 2022 and 2025, daily use decreased in 17 EU Member States. The largest decreases were recorded in Spain and Luxembourg, both with a decline of just over 2 percentage points, while Croatia and Lithuania showed the largest increases, with an increase of almost 3 percentage points each.

More men than women are users

Daily use is still significantly higher among men than among women, the percentage is 20,8 and 12,6 percent respectively.

The use is most common in the age group of 35-49 years, followed by the age groups of 25-34 years, and 50-64 years. It is around 20 percent. For the youngest and the oldest, the use is around 10 percent.
