According to Der Spiegel, she is suspected of handling tobacco industry matters.

In a letter to the Directorate of Health on July 25, Day expressed serious concerns about what she considered to be overly strong measures in areas that were not so important.

She criticized, among other things, "the general ban on smokeless tobacco."

On September 23, Day demanded via email that the proposal for a stricter tobacco products directive should not be circulated during an upcoming Council of Ministers meeting.

A short time later, Health Commissioner John Dalli was forced to resign.

Now, according to Der Spiegel, the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee has asked Secretary-General Catherine Day 154 questions about her actions and demanded swift answers to the questions. The committee also wants answers to questions about the "questionable role" played by the anti-fraud agency OLAF in the bribery allegations against the outgoing Health Commissioner Dalli.
