The UN experts have established a dialogue with some of the main tobacco companies operating in Malawi, such as British American Tobacco, Imperial, Philip Morris International and Japan Tobacco Group, after human rights violations were reported in the sector.
According to a press release from the UN, the reported cases affect over 7,000 adults and 3,000 children.
The experts call, among other things, for strengthened monitoring and corporate responsibility to prevent human rights violations and to ensure that codes of conduct are implemented in practice.
